Product Review
Amazon.com Review

If you've got kids then you've got messes (of course, those without kids aren't mess-free either). This sturdy, yet still lightweight, DustBuster is high-powered for deep cleaning. Complete with crevice tool and extension, as well as an upholstery brush, this vacuum gets those nasty messes wherever they occur, without the heavy awkwardness of a full-size vacuum. Its easy-to-hold handle makes it simple to quickly pull it out of its recharging carriage, use it, and then return it for recharging. When cleaning, simply remove the filter, shake out its contents, and return it to the internal cavity of the vacuum. One warning: it's meant for heavy-duty indoor use only. --Teresa Simanton

Summary: Replacement battery difficult to find 2008-01-28
Comment: The Dustbuster starting losing charge after about a year. It was difficult to remove the battery from the housing. The instructions said to pull on the tabs and to strike the front of the product on a suitable surface to dislodge the battery. There were no tabs to pull up on and striking the unit did not do the trick. So with a screw driver and some pliers I was able to pry it lose. So after spending time getting the battery out, I was unable to find a nickel cadmium battery replacement so in the trash the vaccuam went. I will not buy another.

Summary: Dustbuster Busted 2006-04-30
Comment: The idea of the Dustbuster is great and aside from the battery problems, I can't complain. The batteries failed within a year an a half. These are nickel-cadmium batteries and opening the bottom door reveals a message on the battery pack - something like "pull on tabs to remove". I hate to say it, but this pack is a permanent piece of the the vacuum. It is not intended to be removed! The battery pack didn't fail by means of NiCad memory. One of the cells developed a short and discharges overnight if not left on the charger. As one other reviewer mentioned, real poor charger design which probably cooks the pack over time. Can't say Black & Decker thought of their customers on this one.

Summary: Still working after *9* years 2005-10-03
Comment: I reviewed this item a year ago (below) & have the following add'l comments:

1) Still difficult to find filters (tho you can wash such on top rack of dishwasher)
2) I don't have battery problems (am only on second) BUT I put it back on the charger immediately after every use (well, duhhhh!).

Still works great on kitty litter and kitchen detris.

Summary: Dustbuster Filter Rip-off 2005-02-02
Comment: This is a decent product. I wish it would run longer between charges, but that's not my major problem. WHY THE HECK MUST WE BUY THE PLASTIC FILTER GUARD WHEN ALL WE NEED IS THE FLUTED PAPER FILTER, WHICH PROBABLY COSTS ABOUT A BUCK OF THE NEARLY $10 COST OF A COMPLETE FILTER ASSEMBLY. THAT IS JUST PLAIN OUTRAGEOUS!!

Summary: Black & Decker Should be Ashamed 2004-10-24
Comment: Black & Decker is still using nickel-cadmium (NiCD) batteries, years after the much better nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries have become common. If you buy a Dustbuster, you'll be buying a new battery pack in less than a year. Black & Decker are so darn greedy that they do not even use a constant-current charger for the NiCD batteries (which this battery chemistry requires). They save 40 cents on the charger this way, and get to sell a LOT more batteries. Perhaps worst of all, NiCD battery packs in the landfill are quite toxic to the ground water. Buy a Makita vacuum instead - or at least, make sure the portable vacuum you DO buy has nontoxic batteries and a decent charger.
